The Alchemist is in!
It’s our pleasure to announce that British born artist, Johnny Darko, will be exhibiting at GDCA galleries as part of a group show, marking his debut exhibition in the United States!
Darko uses an exciting alchemical process of acids over gold, copper and genuine silver leaf to create stunning, ethereal contemporary pieces floated with a two-part epoxy resin.
Collaborating curator for GDCA Galleries, Martha De Perez, remarked "I was fortunate enough to visit Johnny Darko in his atelier at his Chateau in France where he now lives and watch this fascinating process of the transmutation of precious leaf through acids. No paints, no structure, just a pure, exhilarating process of two elements coming together to create otherworldly art under the watchful eye of this modern day Alchemist!!"
Darko carved out a successful and pioneering career throughout Australia and has exhibited extensively throughout Europe and we are very excited to be showcasing his work here in Los Angeles at GDCA Galleries.

Since 2005, British artist, Johnny Darko, has been creating one of a kind pieces with gold, copper and silver leaf. “I cover the entire canvas with leaf which I then oxidize with various acids at various strengths…the end result is remarkable. The gold and copper burn, changing colour and depth and a wonderful “tarnished” effect remains... reminiscent of an old worn Chateau panel one might see throughout Europe”.
Darko successfully carved out a unique and exciting career in the Australian art landscape but it wasn’t long before he began craving the diverse culture and history so prevalent throughout Europe. That craving eventually brought him back to European shores where he settled in SouthWest France, where, along with his partner Ashley, is restoring an 18th century French Chateau.
If the art of “Alchemy” is to take the seemingly ordinary and transform it into something quite extraordinary, then, artist Johnny Darko is indeed the “alchemist de force”.
The Alchimie Art Gallery is located at Chateau de Lomenie in SouthWest France.
Johnny’s work is now displayed within intriguing themed rooms….imagine walking through a decaying opera house, an abandoned Chateau salon, an Alchemist’s den or an Apothecary shop. It’s a one of a kind, immersive experience of artistic splendour!
